Doing Our Part to Build a Better Community

by

Philanthropy means goodwill to fellow members of the human race. The word calls to mind many things: wealthy men and women who start foundations to help communities around the globe; a requirement for membership to any number of social organizations; celebrities acting as ambassadors for their favorite causes. But does it make you think of your own community? Does it create in your mind a list of ways that you can help the people who live and work right here in northwest Pennsylvania with you?

At Marsha Marsh Real Estate Services, philanthropy is something we value because we value our community. Doing for and giving to others strengthens the community, and a strong community is one in which we all want to live and do business. As Marsha puts it, “We all make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

We are committed to using our talents and resources to give what we can in support of the Greater Erie community. We each have our own ways of giving. Some of us participate in ministries at church, while others serve on committees and boards devoted to helping area youth. Some of us are excellent fundraisers and event planners, and some of us make great coaches for youth sports.

We hope that you’ll join us in our continuous efforts to improve this community we love. It is important to keep in mind that philanthropy does not have to be grand or involve major drives or campaigns. It can take place right in your own neighborhood and doesn’t have to cost you a penny. Check in on you elderly neighbor, bring a meal to the hard-working single parent you know, or just keep on shoveling/snow-blowing down the sidewalk a few more houses. It can be something you do on your own or with a group. Give blood or host a blood drive. Sign up for that race you’ve always wanted to run, and consider doing some fundraising while you train.

Know that any gesture, small or large, will make someone’s day better and will likely be passed on. An act that feels like no big deal to you is actually a critical part of strengthening your community.

Big Success at the Erie Otters’ Big Assist Night!

by

In the spirit of helping others within our community, the REALTORS® of Marsha Marsh Real Estate Services manned two collection stations at the Thursday, February 6th Otters game, where fans participated in the Big Assist Night by donating coloring books and crayons for the children at our local Shriners Hospital. The new Erie Insurance Arena was filled with folks cheering on our local hockey team (with the second best record in their league!), and, for those who brought donations, admission was only $5.00.

If you’ve been to a game, you’ve probably noticed that the Marsh family is a proud sponsor of the Otters’ tunnel that opens up each game. We’re proud to support our team and we were especially excited at Thursday’s game when our broker, Laban Marsh, and his son, Drew, along with Levi Marsh and his son, Liam, had the privilege of walking to center ice to drop the opening puck! We were also proud to have our wonderful, generous agents volunteer their time to collect donations that help kids right here in our community.

If you missed Thursday’s game, don’t worry! There will be another Otters Big Assist Night on March 5th. Bring a donation of mac-and-cheese for the Second Harvest Food Bank and get your game ticket for only $5.00!

Looking Forward in 2014

by MMRES Team

It's New Year's resolution time, which means that many of us are motivated to make some powerful changes in our lives. We might decide to exercise more, eat healthier foods, read more, or save more money. Whatever your resolutions may be, we hope you'll add one more to your list. January is Financial Wellness Month, so let's resolve to focus on a financially sound 2014. There are many ways to do this depending on each person's situation, but we have some tips to help you be financially prepared for your real estate-related changes.

  1. Do some basic winter maintenance: If you haven't already done so, take a few minutes to do some basic winter maintenance. Check for drafty doors and windows, and make the appropriate repairs. Change or clean your furnace air filter.
  2. Make a list of potential home improvement projects: As you enjoy watching the snow fall from the warmth of your living room, you may begin to notice some things you'd like to change. From simple changes like a new wall color to more elaborate plans, such as updating your kitchen, you'll want to make a list of potential projects for the year and create a budget for each item. Need vendor names? Just call your MMRES agent and ask!
  3. Tackle that list of little home repairs: If you're thinking about selling your home this year, this is a perfect time to start considering repairs or small projects you'll need to complete to make your home as appealing as possible to potential buyers. Talk to your agent, as he/she can help you prioritize and come up with an ideal list price for your home.
  4. Consider earning passive income: Perhaps this is your year to buy an investment property. You'll definitely want to do some research and number-crunching now to make the process easier down the road. Come up with a realistic budget that you can stick to. Make a list of must-haves, as well as items about which you're willing to be flexible. our agents will be happy to answer any questions you may have about investment properties.

Looking Back on a Successful 2013

by MMRES Team

We are proud of our agents' 2013 accomplishments and endeavors. Our own Mary Huffman received the REALTOR® of the Year Award from the Greater Erie Board of REALTORS® in December! Mary has been a REALTOR® for over 19 years. In addition to her work in real estate, Mary is an accomplished cake decorator and generously gives her time to a number of worthy causes. You can read a bit more about Mary and her award at GoErie.com. On a related note, REALTOR® Stacey Santos was sworn into the Greater Erie Board of REALTORS® Board of Directors. Congratulations to two outstanding agents!

As you know, our agents are very involved in the Greater Erie community and played active roles in a number of philanthropic events over the past year.

  • United Way Erie Free Taxes Program: This program was launched in January 2013 to help qualified Erie residents.  Learn more here
  • Erie Otters Big Assist Wednesdays: In 2013, Marsha Marsh volunteers helped collect items for both the ExpERIEnce Children's Museum and Erie City Mission. It was great fun! Take a look at photos from the event on our blog. Also, be sure to mark your calendars for the 2014 events. We'll collect children's books for the Shriners on February 6th, and macaroni and cheese for the Second Harvest Food Bank on March 8th. Join us for an evening of generosity and great hockey!
  • Knockout Homelessness: Last year, our very own Marsha Marsh served as chair of the event and refereed the first fight of the night at this incredible fundraising event hosted by the Bizarro family. Over $50,000 was raised to benefit the Erie City Mission! See some highlights from the event.
  • United Way - Helping Poverty One House at a Time: We participated in the campaign by donating at least $10 per transaction in 2013. We were also involved in the immensely successful United Way golf tournament, in which the Marsh brothers won $20,000. Through these two projects, MMRES donated a grand total of $28,000 to the United Way last year!
  • American Heart Association's 2014 Open Your Heart campaign: Don't forget that you can still donate to this very worthy cause here. The AHA's annual Heart Ball will take place in February. Click here to make a secure online donation

Client Appreciation Party 2013

by

Helping out in the community is an honor, but we also enjoy celebrating with the folks who make up our community. Many thanks to our 470 clients, vendors, agents, friends, and family who came to our 6th annual Client Appreciation Party on September 22nd. We hold this event each year as a way of saying thank you to our clients for their business and referrals. Without their loyalty, as well as the hard work of our excellent agents, we wouldn't be able to celebrate our incredible growth in just 6 short years!

Though the weather forced us to move from our normal Dorn Road location to the Perry Highway Hose Company on Oliver Road, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day! We had a climbing wall, bounce house, face painter, Chinese auction, expERIEnce Children's museum activities, great food from Grabski's, and we even ended the night with awesome fireworks!

In addition to celebrating with our clients, this year's event gave us an opportunity to help out the expERIEnce Children's Museum. We collected supplies by asking attendees to donate any of these items: poster board, tacky glue, Elmer's glue, hot glue sticks, scissors, construction paper, foam core board, solid party supplies, and large storage totes. Thanks to everyone's generous donations, we were able to deliver over 14 totes packed with supplies for our local children's museum!

Anyone who donated received a sheet of tickets to try their luck in our Chinese auction! Prizes included Vera Bradley items, Razor scooters, Lake Shore Country Club golf passes, MMRES blanket, Razor Pocket Rocket Electric Mini Bike, an iPad Mini, HD TV, and much more! There was also a bonus prize and Cary Langdon (Rebecca Outlaw's client) was the lucky winner of a free stay in Aruba in October 2014. She will enjoy a Presidential Suite that sleeps six, with two bedrooms and a full kitchen!

See pictures from this year's event on Facebook

At Marsha Marsh Real Estate Services, we think it's always the right time to celebrate and give back to your community. We look forward to continuing to work with you to meet all of your real estate needs and to make our community the best it can be!

Open Your Heart

by Marsha Marsh, REALTOR®

It is both an honor and a privilege to serve as chairperson of the 2014 “Open Your Heart” fund raising campaign, sponsored by the Erie division of the American Heart Association. However, this title comes with the enormous responsibility of reaching out to the community for donations and support for this lifesaving organization.

Thanks to generous donations from ordinary and extraordinary people, community members, volunteers, medical professionals and corporate leaders, the American Heart Association is able to continue its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Heart disease is very personal to me. Both of my parents survived open heart surgery. And, while I have been blessed with four healthy boys and eight beautiful grandchildren, the statistics on childhood heart disease are staggering.

  • Did you know that in the U.S., twice as many children die from congenital heart disease (CHD) each year than from all forms of childhood cancer combined yet funding for pediatric cancer research is five times higher than funding for CHD?
  • In Erie County, more than 500 students were diagnosed with cardiovascular conditions.

As a leader and an entrepreneur in the Erie area, I have always been compelled to give back to the community. Over the years, my family and colleagues have raised thousands of dollars for area non-profits. It is my goal to reach or surpass $60,000 in donations during this year’s “Open Your Heart” campaign. I hope I can count on all of you who have been contributors in the past to join me in this momentous fundraising effort. All monies raised during this annual appeal will be designated solely for research in the fight against congenital birth defects, education and advocacy in our battle against childhood obesity.  Seventy-five percent of all local donations will remain within the Erie community.

The campaign will culminate with Heart Ball 2014, “Some Enchanted Evening”, on Saturday, February 22 at the Ambassador Banquet Center. The grand gala will feature entertainment, a live and silent auction and a sit down dinner. One of the evening highlights will be “the mission moment” where the audience will be introduced to Gianna, a six year old Erie girl with a compelling story on the ravages of childhood heart disease.

Please give generously by returning the enclosed form with self-addressed stamped envelope or by submitting your donation online at www.heart.org/eriepaheartball. For more information please contact me at marsha.marsh@marshamarsh.com or call Gina or Jody at the American Heart Association Office at 814.836.0013.

Thank you.

Respectfully,

Marsha Marsh
